The Western Cape
The capital of the Western Cape area is Cape Town; the area is also known as the 'fairest Cape' and has a population of around 4.5 million people. The area is rich in history and has many fabled tourist attractions such as, Table Mountain, which you can walk to the top, or take the easier option of the cable car; Robben Island, with daily boat trips from the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town, accompanied by a guided tour of the island; the Cape Winelands, where you can wander

 

Gauteng Province
Gauteng is the smallest of South Africa 's nine provinces, measuring 18 810 square kilometres. The three main cities in the province are Johannesburg, Soweto and Tshwane (previously known as Pretoria). Gauteng's history dates back to 218 000 BC, when a meteorite created the Tswaing crater north of Tshwane

  

KwaZulu Natal
Appropriately named "South Africa's Garden Province ", the lush and green province forms the east coast of South Africa from the Mozambique boundary southwards to Port Edward.

Enticing, spectacular and fascinating, the province is a subtropical coastline, with savannah heading east towards majestic Drakensberg mountain range in the west. KwaZulu Natal's beaches are along the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, and are some of South Africa's most popular holiday spots. It is a multi-cultural showpiece destination

 

 

Mpumalanga
Mpumalanga translates to 'Place where the sun rises' from the local language, SiSwati, and is bordered by Mozambique and Swaziland in the east, and Gauteng province lies to the west. It is situated mainly on the plateau grasslands of the Middleveld. In the north-east it rises towards mountain peaks and then changes completely with the amazing escarpment. Mpumalanga is split into two main areas, the Highveld is the area west of the escarpment and the Lowveld lies east of the escarpment. In places drops of hundreds of metres can bee seen, in dramatic scenery.

  

There are 18 000 indigenous vascular plant species in South Africa of which 80% are uniquely South African.

 

Free State
The Free State is the agricultural centre of South Africa. The grassy plains are where more than 70% of South Africa's grain consumption is produced. The Free State is also rich in mineral wealth, representing for 20% of the world's total gold production.

  

Eastern Cape
The Eastern Cape boasts a remarkable natural diversity, ranging from the lush, evergreen Tsitsikamma Forest to the rugged Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area, Great Karoo and of course the stunning coastline. Watersports can be enjoyed in abundance along the coast of the Eastern Cape from fishing to kloofing, sailing to surfing - the East Cape is known for its fantastic surf - and many more.

 

Limpopo Province
Previously called the Northern Province, Limpopo is an area of vast diversity, with some of the best game viewing areas and parks in South Africa. Limpopo is bordered by Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana, the Kruger National Park also takes up a good part of the province. It is the northern-most province of South Africa.

   

Kimberley may have the biggest man-made hole in the world, but did you know that the southern Free State town of Jagersfontein has the deepest vertical man-made hole (and that a pair of Verreaux’s Eagles breed in it?

 

Northern Cape
The Northern Cape is South Africa's largest province and has a land area of some 361 830 square km. The province is home to a population of approximately 850 000. The capital of the province is Kimberley, and other major towns within the province are Calvinia, Colesberg, Kuruman, Springbok, Upington and De Aar

 

 

 

South Africa is famous for its sunshine. A subtropical location, moderated by ocean on three sides of the country and the altitude of the interior plateau, account for the warm temperate conditions so typical of South Africa - and so popular with its foreign visitors.

 

 

Blyde River Canyon is the third largest canyon in the world - and the largest green one. The Grand Canyon in the US is the biggest, and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia the second, but both are dry as bones.

 

 

 

 

The Republic of South Africa takes up an area of 1,221,037 square kilometres - The coast line stretches for some 2954 kilometres, with many beautiful beaches and wonderful sea view

The North West Province of South Africa is bordered by Botswana in the North, on the south by the Free State and the Northern Cape provinces, and on the northeast and east by the Limpopo and Gauteng provinces. The North West Province has a land mass of some 118,797 sq km with an estimated population of around 4 million people.

South Africa has the oldest meteor scar in the world, just across the Vaal River near Parys, called the Vredefort Dome. The meteor plummeted to Earth nearly two billion years ago (Earth is said to be 4,5 billion years old), predating the heady days of oxygen and multi-celled life.

 

 

The world’s first heart transplant was done in South Africa in 1967 by South African Dr Chris Barnard.
